The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Anime Film Returns in 4K on July 3 in Japan

To celebrate the 20th anniversary!

Mamoru Hosoda‘s animated film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will return to theaters in a newly restored 4K version starting July 3 in Japan. The film is set to be screened in 147 theaters nationwide, with additional locations expected to be announced.

When it was first released in July 2006, the film opened in just six theaters. Thanks to strong word of mouth, it gradually expanded across the country, eventually reaching more than 100 theaters. The movie went on to enjoy an exceptional theatrical run of around 40 weeks and received numerous awards, including recognition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

Additionally, the largest exhibition ever dedicated to the director, titled “Mamoru Hosoda’s Origin/Exhibition“, will open on June 18 at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO. The exhibition will then travel to Osaka starting October 28, and to Fukuoka from January 22, 2027.

GKIDS describes the movie as follows:

Makoto is a typical teenage girl who spends most of her days slacking off with friends. One day while rushing to meet her aunt, she nearly gets hit by a train, but at the last second, finds herself jumping backwards in time to before the accident. She immediately makes use of her newfound ability to re-do every minor inconvenience– from poor exam results to awkward confessions of love. However, when faced with the consequences of tampering with time, Makoto must do everything she can to avoid a dire future that can’t be reversed.
