Ufotable Art Director Kazuo Ebisawa Passes Away at 71

Longtime anime art director.

Anime studio ufotable announced on April 30 that art director Kazuo Ebisawa passed away on April 14 at the age of 71. A private service was held on April 20. The studio also said it will not accept condolences or flowers.

He began working in animation in 1969 and contributed to many famous titles, including Akira, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Fate/Zero, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Before joining ufotable, he worked on well-known projects such as Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Macross: Do You Remember Love?. He became an art director in 1980 and later worked on the iconic film Akira.

Ebisawa joined ufotable in 2000 and eventually became head of its art department. He also helped train younger artists and contributed to many of the studio’s major productions.
