Crunchyroll has acquired the worldwide distribution rights, excluding Asia except India, to the next feature film from acclaimed anime director Makoto Shinkai. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will jointly handle the film’s theatrical distribution.
The project will mark Shinkai’s highly anticipated return to the big screen. The film’s title, story, and release date have not yet been announced.
Shinkai is best known for acclaimed films such as Your Name., Weathering With You, and Suzume. His 2023 film Suzume grossed more than $300 million worldwide, received international critical acclaim, and was selected in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and nominated for a Golden Globe.
With Your Name. becoming a worldwide phenomenon and one of the highest-grossing Japanese animated films ever, Shinkai has established himself as one of the most influential directors in modern anime.
Fans will now have to wait for more details about his next feature film.
