Japanese jazz pianist and composer Yuji Ohno has passed away at the age of 84. His official website announced that he died peacefully in his sleep on May 4 due to old age.
The statement said that Ohno continued living normally until the very end and did not suffer. His family already held a private funeral and memorial service, while a public farewell event will be organized later.
Ohno was one of Japan’s most famous composers. He started his career as a jazz pianist in the early 1960s and later composed music for films, television dramas, and anime. He is best known for creating the iconic music of the anime series Lupin the Third, including the legendary “Theme of Lupin the Third”, which remains popular today.
The official X account for the Lupin the Third franchise also shared a message thanking Ohno for his many years of contributions to the series and the music industry.
Even after being hospitalized in 2022, Ohno continued his musical activities and prepared projects for his fans. A concert by “Lupintic All Stars Produced by YUJI OHNO”, planned for May 30 at Billboard Live TOKYO, will still take place as scheduled.
Yuji Ohno leaves behind a major legacy in jazz and anime music, and his work will continue to inspire fans around the world.
