Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You TV Anime Sets July 9 Premiere, Releases Second Trailer

The TV anime “Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You“, adapted from Jinushi’s original manga, is scheduled to begin broadcasting on July 9. A second main promotional video has also been released.

In addition to its television broadcast, the series was released early as an ABEMA exclusive preview, with episodes 1 to 6 presented in shortened 10-minute formats organized by episode order. Crunchyroll has also begun streaming the first 12 mini-episodes, corresponding to the first six episodes of the ABEMA version.

The ABEMA version and the TV broadcast also feature different opening and ending themes. The ABEMA opening theme includes “Kuzuri nen” by ZUTOMAYO and “NIGHT DANCER” by imase. For the main TV anime, the opening theme is “Ichijiku Kemuri” by ZUTOMAYO, while the ending theme is “Fiction” by imase.

Details have been announced for a special program airing on July 4 at 8:30 PM JST, ahead of the TV premiere. The program will feature the main voice cast, including Takuya Sato (Sasaki), Seena Hoshiki (Yamada / Tamaya), and Shinya Takahashi (Suzuki), who will discuss the series’ appeal and its characters. A themed talk segment is also planned, featuring “cocoa cigarettes,” inspired by the story.

The series began serialization on X (formerly Twitter) on March 9, 2022. It is now also being serialized in Square Enix’s monthly magazine Big Gangan. The manga won first place in the Web Manga category of the Next Manga Awards 2022.

Square Enix publishes the series in English and describes the story as follows:

At age forty-five, office worker Sasaki has had enough of the corporate grind. His only solace is smoking-and the friendly smile of supermarket cashier Yamada. When Sasaki can’t find Yamada after a particularly trying day, a striking woman invites him to smoke with her. The despondent man thinks he’s made a new smoking buddy in the cool, teasing Tayama, but Sasaki doesn’t realize he already knows her!
