PIKOTARO Embraces 60 with Flying AI Madness in “CHANCHANKO KANREKI60”

A rebirth in red!

PIKOTARO, the global viral icon behind “PPAP”, returns with “CHANCHANKO KANREKI60”, a wildly imaginative new single created for NHK’s long-running program “Minna no Uta”. Blending Japanese tradition, AI-powered visuals, and his signature absurdist humor, PIKOTARO’s latest music video is a surreal tribute to turning 60.

Directed by his creator and alter ego Kosaka Daimaou, the video pushes boundaries with the help of generative AI tools. Viewers are taken on a psychedelic ride featuring a flying PIKOTARO, a giant-sized PIKOTARO leading a crowd of 50,000 dancers in red chanchanko vests, and enough visual chaos to make your head spin, in the best way.

The track celebrates kanreki (the Japanese 60th birthday tradition), a symbolic moment of rebirth marking the completion of the zodiac cycle. The red chanchanko vest, central to this custom, is reinterpreted here with flamboyant flair and futuristic energy, turning this personal milestone into a global digital celebration.

“Let’s celebrate all the 60-year-olds in our lives – with humans, machines, the world, and our families – Pi!!” said PIKOTARO, who noted this was the most AI they’ve ever used in a video.

Part love letter to elders, part digital fever dream, “CHANCHANKO KANREKI60” is a bold evolution in PIKOTARO’s creative legacy, honoring the past while dancing full-throttle into the techno-future.

More about PIKOTARO:
In 2016, the video for “PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)” was picked up by artists and global media outlets including Justin Bieber, CNN, and the BBC, sparking a worldwide phenomenon.

He became the first Japanese artist in 26 years to enter the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and the song was recognised by Guinness World Records as the “shortest song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.”

In 2017, he also attended the state banquet during President Trump’s visit to Japan and was appointed by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an official ambassador for the promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
