The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe R-15 Version Announced for October 4 in Japan!

Theatrical screening in Japan begins on October 4.

The anime movie The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe is set to return to Japanese theaters starting October 4th in a revised version with the title The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe Shinseiban.

This updated release has received an R-15 rating, a shift from the original PG12 rating. Additionally, the Shinseiban version features “retakes” for 327 scenes and includes newly re-recorded audio.

The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe premiered in November 2023 in Japan, achieving a box office gross of 2.79 billion yen (approximately US$19.11 million). The film was a contender for Best Animated Movie at the 47th Japan Academy Awards, where it won an Excellence Award.

This marks a significant event for the GeGeGe no Kitaro anime franchise, as it is the first theatrical film in 15 years since Gegege no Kitaro: Nihon Bakuretsu!! in 2008. The project is directed by Go Koga, with screenplay writer Hiroyuki Yoshino and character designer Toko Yatabe, known for their work on various anime titles, contributing to the production.

Synopsis of the serie, according to Crunchyroll:
Nearly twenty years into the 21st century, people have forgotten the existence of Yokai. When a number of unexplainable phenomena plague adults of the human world with confusion and chaos, thirteen-year-old Mana writes a letter to the Yokai Post in search of answers, only to be greeted by Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro…
