Tatsuki Fujimoto and Kenshi Yonezu Talk Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc

Two people of the same generation.

A video has been released featuring a conversation between Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc creator Tatsuki Fujimoto and Kenshi Yonezu, who provided the theme song “IRIS OUT” and the ending theme “JANE DOE” for the film.

Three years after their collaboration on the TV series, the two finally met in person for this conversation. Yonezu, who had been a devoted fan of Fujimoto’s work even before the show aired, shared: “When I was a child, I also wanted to become a manga artist, so seeing someone close to my age create something so groundbreaking was incredibly inspiring. I vividly remember thinking that I had to push myself to do my best.”

Fujimoto, a long-time fan of Yonezu‘s music since his school days, shared his thoughts on the TV series KICK BACK’s opening theme. “I think Yonezu-san’s songs are very accessible to listeners. They’ve created many tracks that can serve as a guide for other artists. I found that he’s very good at picking out the right elements, and I appreciated how the quirky, playful aspects were also included in ‘KICK BACK.’ I think it turned out to be a really great song,” he said.

In the second half of the conversation, the focus shifts to the movie’s theme song, “IRIS OUT,” which was written and composed by Yonezu. There’s also a segment where he delves into the secret story behind the production of the ending theme, “JANE DOE.” Beyond the music, the discussion spans a wide range of topics that highlight the creators’ shared sensibilities and generational perspectives, including Fujimoto’s creation of the character “Reze,” the manga, books, and films they enjoyed as children, and the reasons that inspired them to pursue their creative paths.

Today, Yonezu‘s YouTube channel also released a music video for “JANE DOE”. Set on a station platform, the story of Yonezu and Utada, who happen to be sitting on the same bench, exerts a faint gravity on each other like a large invisible circle.

STORY:
Denji (Kikunosuke Toya) became “Chainsaw Man”, a boy with a devil’s heart, and is now part of Special Division 4’s devil hunters. After a date with Makima (Tomori Kusunoki), the woman of his dreams, Denji takes shelter from the rain and meets a girl called Reze (Reina Ueda). The girl, who works at a nearby café, gives him a gentle smile, and they quickly grow close. From this encounter onward, Denji’s everyday life begins to change.

The first season of Chainsaw Man was a huge success, with memorable characters and a unique aesthetic. VIZ Media releases the manga in English, Crunchyroll describes the series as such:

Denji is a teenage boy living with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. Due to the debt his father left behind, he has been living a rock-bottom life while repaying his debt by harvesting devil corpses with Pochita.

One day, Denji is betrayed and killed. As his consciousness fades, he makes a contract with Pochita and gets revived as “Chainsaw Man” — a man with a devil’s heart.
