Independent animation producer and distributor GKIDS is teaming up with Japanese stop-motion animation studio Dwarf (best known for its stop-motion work on Pokémon Concierge and Rilakkuma and Kaoru) to co-develop a new animated film adaptation of Sunny, the acclaimed autobiographical manga by Taiyo Matsumoto.

The film is currently in development and is set to be written and directed by Michael Arias, with completion anticipated by 2029.

Sunny vol. 1:

The film is among five new animated projects set to be featured during this year’s Annecy Animation Showcase at Cannes, taking place on May 18, 2025, as part of Animation Day.

VIZ Media publishes the Sunny manga series in English, with the first volume described as follows:

What is Sunny? Sunny is a car. Sunny is a car you take on a drive with your mind. It takes you to the place of your dreams. Sunny is the story of beating the odds, in the ways that count. It’s the brand-new masterwork from Eisner Award-winner Taiyo Matsumoto, one of Japan’s most innovative and acclaimed manga artists. Translated by Tekkonkinkreet film director Michael Arias!
