MAPPA to Merge With Group Studio Contrail

MAPPA to take over “Tsurubamiiro no Nagiko-tachi” production.

Animation studio MAPPA will absorb and merge with Contrail, a smaller animation studio in its corporate group. After the merger, MAPPA will take over all rights and obligations of Contrail, and Contrail will be dissolved.

MAPPA is a well-known Japanese animation studio. It has produced popular anime series such as JUJUTSU KAISEN, Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise, Zombie Land Saga, and Attack on Titan. The studio has also expanded into merchandise, music labels, and other rights-related businesses. For the fiscal year ending March 2025, MAPPA reported a final profit of 677 million yen.

Contrail was founded in 2019 as a group company of MAPPA. It was created to produce a new feature film directed by Sunao Katabuchi, the director of In This Corner of the World. However, for the fiscal year ending March 2025, Contrail reported a final loss of 68 million yen and was in a state of excess debt.

Contrail is currently working on the project Tsurubamiiro no Nagiko-tachi. Because the merger announcement states that all rights and obligations will be transferred, MAPPA is expected to take over the production of this project in the future.
