YOUR FORMA series continues to captivate viewers with its unique blend of science fiction, suspense and human emotion. Actress Hisako Tojo, who plays Raissa, recently shared her impressions of the series’ universe, her character and the dubbing experience. In this interview, she reveals not only the emotional stakes behind her role, but also the depth of the futuristic world imagined in YOUR FORMA.
On the occasion of the episode 8 of YOUR FORMA, we had the pleasure of chatting with Hisako Tojo. Interviews with the staff and cast will be published on AnimeTV following episodes 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, and 13.
Official Trailer:
To start off, Tojo-san, could you tell us what you think makes Your Forma such an intriguing series?
Tojo: I find it fascinating how Amicus robots have become so integrated into the everyday life of humans, and how the “Your Forma” brain terminal allows its users to access whatever information they may need, with perfect accuracy every time, in a matter of seconds is also quite interesting.
If you think of it as a potential result of humanity’s eternal pursuit of convenience, then Your Forma is like looking at one of the possible futures awaiting humanity. It really is the kind of world you can’t help but dream about, where you can communicate without a phone, or know what the weather is outside without having to ask. The thought of having my own strengths and weaknesses analyzed is also…well, it’s quite scary, but I would still want to know.
However, as a result of all of that, Raissa’s big brother ended up destroying himself. His character represents what’s warped and unforgiving about this world of Your Forma. The parts of the story that highlight how because he doesn’t do things in the “ordinary way” he’s punished by society for it, or how being in a job that suits you doesn’t guarantee happiness are what make Your Forma so intriguing to me.
Can you tell me how you reacted after reading the script at first?
Tojo: There were a lot of words I wasn’t used to saying, and to be honest, it was pretty difficult (laughs). Before recording began, I’d already been told that I was the culprit in the case from Episodes 5 to 8.
However, I hadn’t been given the details of what the culprit had done, so as I received each script, I read it while comparing it with the original light novel. In that sense, I feel like I might have had a similar experience to our viewers. Even though I knew my character was the one behind it all, it was still fun to try to figure out what was going to happen while reading the script and following the story.
What kind of impression do you have about the character you play, Raissa?
Tojo: When we first began recording, Director Ozaki talked to me about Raissa’s character. He said, “She seems like a bright and friendly woman, but she is definitely the type to understand, ‘Oh, if I act this way, I’ll be popular,’ and then adjust her behavior accordingly.” Hearing that, I got the impression that she is the type of woman who lives as an idealized version of herself, hiding certain sides that she doesn’t want others to see.
But that doesn’t mean she’s strong enough to throw away all unnecessary emotions for the sake of her goal. That vulnerability is why she ended up exposed as the culprit, and I think those imperfections make her more likable. She reached her brother emotionally with her actions, and that’s how the story led to the ending we saw. I am very happy that in the end Raissa didn’t kill anyone…
Was there anything in particular you were conscious about while playing Raissa?
Tojo: I was very conscious while voice acting to not let it slip even a little bit that Raissa was the culprit. I wanted to inject her lines with feelings of unease and agitation, but I knew if I did that then in this world Harold would have definitely picked up on her traits. So, I intentionally tried to forget my character was the culprit and simply focused on playing a friendly, good-natured, beautiful woman.
Also, Sound Director Satoshi Yano gave me the direction to, “Perform like you’re in a dub,” so I focused on sounding extra cheerful and energetic, but not too bubbly or cutesy. More than anything, I was focused on immersing myself in the world the veteran voice actors of the production had already created.
Could you share any memories from the recording sessions?
Tojo: Your Forma as a work contains so many difficult words and unique phrases, which makes performing them a challenge. I really think the veteran actors are so incredible, to be able to handle them so effortlessly. Especially for Episodes 5 through 8, Harold has so many lines! But his actor, Kensho Ono, performed them like they were easy. I couldn’t help but think, “That’s Mr. Ono for you!” Compared to him, I didn’t have many difficult lines myself, so the most difficult one for me to say smoothly was probably, “Harold,” actually (laughs).
Also, the scene where Ganache the cat is caught up in the explosion really left an impression on me; everyone was so worried about Ganache’s safety! We definitely had a lot of cat lovers on set (laughs). I was really happy when New Ganache showed up in the final scene.
Which scenes and lines from Episodes 5 through 8 left the biggest impression on you?
Tojo: I think the line in Episode 8, where Raissa says to Echika, “You wouldn’t understand, since you’re loved by the Your Forma, you genius Cyber-Inspector,” left an impact on me. Raissa is a person who has truly been tormented by the very existence of geniuses. Her older brother was destroyed because he wasn’t a genius, and in order to get closer to Harold, she had to somehow acquire the abilities of one. Even in this highly advanced world, the gap between regular people and geniuses is huge. Just because someone is born an ordinary person, they must struggle to reach places that a genius can access with ease. Thinking about that left me feeling troubled. I couldn’t help but feel some sympathy for Raissa, cornered to the point of having to wrap everything she said in sarcasm.
Thank you. By the way, if you could dive into someone’s memories like Echika, whose memories would you want to see?
Tojo: The first thing that comes to mind is my parents. The people I know are “a man who became my father” and “a woman who became my mother”, so I would like to see what kind of people they were before becoming my parents. I’d like to know how their way of thinking has changed since they became parents, and how they saw me when I was a child…I think that because they are so close to me, there’s certain things I could never know without a Brain Dive.
And finally, do you have a message for the fans looking forward to the upcoming episodes?
Tojo: Episode 1 to Episode 4 focused on the Amicus, and then Episode 5 to Episode 8 focused on the Your Forma devices, how they work and the anxieties surrounding them, through the cases unfolding in the narrative. I myself do not know what is to come in the following episodes, but I’m sure it will be a story to shake the foundation of the world Your Forma takes place in and expose the deeper darkness of the world we have yet to see. As a viewer now, I’m so excited to keep watching! The show really has such an incredible cast and performances. I hope everyone tunes in to watch the characters uncover the secrets of Your Forma together!
