The film’s critical reception was extremely positive. Presented at numerous festivals, it received over 60 awards, including the Hiroshima Peace Film Award, the Grand Jury Prize for Best Film at the 6th Toronto Japanese Film Festival and the Jury Prize at the 41st Annecy Festival. It also won three awards at the 40th Japan Academy Prize. The feature has also been distributed to cinemas in many countries around the world.

In 2019, this international success enabled the production of 39 minutes of additional footage for a Japanese re-release. Bringing the film’s running time to 168 minutes, it becomes one of the two longest animated films to date. This new long version has never been released outside Japan.
