HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle Movie Earns Over 2 Billion Yen in First 3 Days!

All of Japan is excited about this exciting and moving battle!

The match of the decade, Karasuno vs. Nekoma opened last Friday! The brand-new HAIKYU!! anime film “HAIKYU!! The Dumpster Battle” (released February 16) grossed 2.23 billion yen, with over 1.52 million tickets sold in its first three days of its release.

According to Toho, the film’s distributor, the movie “recorded the highest first-week takings for a film released in 2024”, making it the biggest opening weekend to date and the fifth biggest opening in Japanese box office history!

To get an idea of the scale of initial takings, The Super Mario Bros Movie (final takings 14.01 billion yen), released in 2023, earned 1.8 billion yen in its first three days of release in Japan and SPY x FAMILY CODE: White Movie (currently playing and worth over 5 billion yen) grossed 1.2 billion yen in the three days of its release! Toho animation returns to produce the two Haikyu!! FINAL anime films with the animation continuing to be made by the team at Production I.G. Haikyu!! FINAL anime film’s first of two parts, is subtitled “Gomisuteba no Kessen” (The Dumpster Battle). Crunchyroll is streaming all four TV anime seasons of the Haikyu!! adaptation and describes the series as follows:

Based off of the original Weekly Shonen Jump manga series from Haruichi Furudate, Haikyu!! is a slice-of-life sports anime revolving around Shoyo Hinata’s love of volleyball. Inspired by a small-statured pro volleyball player, Hinata creates a volleyball team in his last year of middle school. Unfortunately the team is matched up against the “King of the Court” Tobio Kageyama’s team in their first tournament and inevitably lose. After the crushing defeat, Hinata vows to surpass Kageyama After entering high school, Hinata joins the volleyball team only to find that Tobio has also joined.
