The Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe premiered in November 2023 in Japan, achieving a box office gross of 2.79 billion yen (approximately US$19.11 million). The film was a contender for Best Animated Movie at the 47th Japan Academy Awards, where it won an Excellence Award.
This marks a significant event for the GeGeGe no Kitaro anime franchise, as it is the first theatrical film in 15 years since Gegege no Kitaro: Nihon Bakuretsu!! in 2008.
