The 4K restoration of Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) will make its world premiere on May 20, 2025 at the Cannes Film Festival, screening in the Cinéma de la Plage section, an open-air theater set on the beach and accessible to the public each evening.
Directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) and featuring artwork by Yoshitaka Amano, Angel’s Egg was originally released in 1985 and is considered a cult classic of experimental anime. The 4K version has been restored in honor of the anime’s 40th anniversary.
Angel’ Egg visual for the Cannes screening:

The original 71-minute OVA (original video animation) marked Oshii’s first original anime project and his first major collaboration with Amano, blending philosophical imagery, minimal dialogue, and surreal world-building.
In addition to its Cannes premiere, the restored version will be screened in North American theaters by GKIDS later in 2025.
