Tokyo-based anime production studios A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks the latter formerly known as A-1 Pictures’ Koenji Studio—have announced the establishment of FLINT BASE, a new animation training center designed to nurture emerging talent in the industry.
Set to open in April 2026, FLINT BASE will serve as a hands-on learning environment where newcomers can acquire foundational animation knowledge and develop in-between animation skills. Participants will engage primarily in in-betweening work tied to projects from CloverWorks and A-1 Pictures, allowing them to gain practical experience within a professional production setting.
Each training period will last up to two years, during which entrants will build their technical expertise under the supervision of industry professionals. Recruitment for the program is slated to begin later in 2026, with plans to admit more than ten participants in the first wave. Successful applicants will be employed as contracted staff of CloverWorks.
According to FLINT BASE’s official website, the initiative stems from the studios’ shared goal of expanding opportunities for new graduates and cultivating skilled in-house animators. While A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks have long sought to foster new talent, the limited internal capacity for recruitment and training had constrained their efforts—an issue FLINT BASE now aims to resolve.
Both A-1 Pictures and CloverWorks are subsidiaries of Aniplex, which is itself part of Sony Music Entertainment. Through this new venture, the two studios seek to strengthen the creative foundation of Japan’s animation industry by offering structured, career-building opportunities to the next generation.
