5 Centimeters per Second Live-Action Movie Reveals Main Poster & New Cast Members

Upcoming live-action film adaptation of Makoto Shinkai.

The main poster and full cast details for the live-action adaptation of 5 Centimeters per Second have been unveiled. The film is set to premiere in Japan on October 10, 2025.

The Toho MOVIE Channel on YouTube will also stream talk sessions featuring lead actor Hokuto Matsumura, the live-action film’s director Yoshiyuki Okuyama, and the original anime film’s director Makoto Shinkai. The sessions are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. JST on September 26, October 3, and October 10.

Originally released in 2007 as an anime film by Makoto Shinkai5 Centimeters per Second is now being adapted into a live-action project. Hokuto Matsumura of SixTONES will take on the lead role of Takaki Tono, with Yoshiyuki Okuyama set to direct.

After transferring to the same elementary school, Takaki and Akari became best friends.However, their lives change when the families of both are forced to relocate. After a year of separation, Takaki is about to reunite with Akari. As he sits on the train from Tokyo, memories of the past rush through Takaki’s head, his meeting time with Akari drawing ever closer. Takaki and Akari begin to wonder if they will ever be able to see each other again, and share their secret feelings. Join Takaki on a journey into three interconnected tales of love and lost innocence that span the minutes and months of their lives.
