New Mononoke Project Announced, Introduces Third Medicine Seller

Hirofumi Araki voices new Medicine Seller.

Twin Engine has announced a brand-new Mononoke project, introducing a third Medicine Seller named Ken no Tsurugi.

Actor Hirofumi Araki, who previously portrayed the Medicine Seller in the recent Mononoke stage plays, will voice the new character. The company has not yet confirmed whether the project will be an anime film or a television series.

According to director Kenji Nakamura, Ken no Tsurugi has a dual personality. He appears laid-back and talkative before supernatural events unfold, but becomes serious and sharp when confronting evil spirits.

Mononoke The Movie: The Phantom in the Rain premiered on Netflix on July 26. The sequel, Mononoke The Movie: Chapter II – The Ashes of Rage, marks the second installment in the “Mononoke The Movie” trilogy is currently streaming on Netflix.

The third film in the Mononoke trilogy, Mononoke the Movie: The Curse of the Serpent, has started its theatrical release on May 29 in Japan.

In feudal Japan, evil spirits known as mononoke plague the countryside, leaving a trail of fear in their wake. One mysterious person has the power to slay the mononoke where they stand; he is known as the Medicine Seller, and he vanquishes the spirits using the power of his Exorcism Sword. In order to draw his sword he must understand the Form, Truth and Reason of the mononoke. Armed with a sharp wit, the Medicine Seller wanders from place to place, striking down the evil spirits in his wake.
