Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet Anime Film Gets 90-Second Preview

Directed by Mamoru Hosoda.

A 90-second preview of Mamoru Hosoda’s upcoming anime film Scarlet has been released. The movie is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters on November 21, followed by a U.S. theatrical release on December 12.

August 1 marks “Summer Wars Day,” celebrating the anniversary of the 2009 release of Hosoda’s acclaimed film Summer Wars and the in-universe birthday of the protagonist’s grandmother. To commemorate the occasion, Summer Wars aired on Nippon TV’s Friday Roadshow. Following the broadcast, a special 30-second teaser for Scarlet was unveiled.

According to Variety, the story revolves around a princess who journeys across time and space. During the announcement event for Scarlet, Hosoda revealed that the film employs a unique animation style, distinct from both traditional 2D and Hollywood-style CGI. The narrative will explore profound themes of life and death, complemented by elements of action and romance.
