Kyoto Animation Arsonist’s Death Sentence Finalized After Appeal Withdrawal

Death sentence has been confirmed

The Osaka High Court announced on Monday that Shinji Aoba, the suspect in the arson attack on Kyoto Animation that claimed 36 lives and injured 32 others, has withdrawn his appeal against the death sentence. With this withdrawal, the trial has concluded, and Aoba’s death sentence is now final.

In December 2023, prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty for Aoba, while the defense argued for a reduced sentence or acquittal, citing his unsound mental state. However, the judge ruled Aoba criminally liable.

In January 2024, the Kyoto District Court ruled in the first instance that he was responsible and sentenced him to death, stating, “The loss of 36 precious lives is an immense and tragic consequence.”

On July 18, 2019, a fire at Kyoto Animation‘s Studio 1 claimed numerous lives, with 70 people inside at the time. Police apprehended Shinji Aoba, then 41, who allegedly started the fire using 40 liters of gasoline. Indicted in December 2020, Aoba sustained severe burns in the incident.

Demolition of Kyoto Animation‘s Studio 1 building was completed in April 2020, and the studio resumed recruitment in July of the same year.
