Kingdom Hearts Anime Series Announced by Disney and Square Enix

The first original “anime” series based on the game Kingdom Hearts, developed by Disney and Square Enix, has been announced. The series is currently titled “Kingdom Hearts” as a working title. It will air on the Disney Channel and be available on Disney+.

The anime is co-produced by Disney Kids & Family and Square Enix. It will tell a completely new story created specifically for the series. Tetsuya Nomura, the creator and director of the Kingdom Hearts series, will be involved alongside the creative team at Square Enix. The first visual shows a mysterious boy holding a Keyblade.

Ayo Davis, President of Disney Kids & Family, said the series will stay true to the spirit of Kingdom Hearts while giving fans a new way to experience its world.

The announcement was made during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event 2026, which began on August 14 in Anaheim, California.

The Kingdom Hearts series follows Sora, a young hero who uses the Keyblade. He travels through different Disney and Pixar worlds, meets familiar characters, builds friendships, and fights against the darkness threatening the worlds.

The first Kingdom Hearts game was released in March 2002. Since then, 20 titles have been released, including versions such as Kingdom Hearts Final Mix with additional content.
