The “Gundam 50th Anniversary Project” has officially been launched ahead of the franchise’s 50th anniversary in 2029. The announcement was made at the “Gundam Conference SPRING 2026” held on May 15, where several major initiatives were revealed at once.
The Mobile Suit Gundam TV series originally began broadcasting on April 7, 1979. Since then, the franchise has expanded into more than 90 works across anime, films, merchandise, model kits, video games, amusement content, and music.
As part of the kickoff, a prologue film titled “Boy and Gundam” was released, exploring themes connected to the original series and the personal memories and emotions tied to it. The film is directed by Tsukuro Hayakawa, with music by PEOPLE 1 (“Masterpiece”).
Several long-term projects leading up to 2029 were also announced. A theatrical prequel titled Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO will be released, expanding the story of SEED FREEDOM (2024). A special promotional video has already been revealed.
A remastered version of the original Mobile Suit Gundam series is also in development, scheduled for release in 2029. Additionally, a new animation project for Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, which marked its 30th anniversary last year, has been confirmed, with further details to come.
The live-action GUNDAM film (working title), co-produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks, Netflix, and Legendary Pictures, also shared a message video from director Jim Mickle.
A major global fan event titled “GUNDAM-Con” will take place from January 9 to 11, 2027 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Designed as a co-creation space with fans, it will include creator showcases, exhibitions, hands-on experiences, and global competitions in Gunpla, card games, and video games. The event is expected to expand internationally after its debut.
Finally, a special exhibition titled “Yoshiyuki Tomino (tentative)” will be held at the Tokyo National Museum to reflect on the legacy of Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino. The franchise also confirmed the development of “Gundam Landmark” projects, and officially designated April 7 as “Gundam Day“, marking the date of the original anime’s first broadcast.

A.C. 195. The space colonies launch Operation Meteor, dropping Gundam mobile suits onto Earth to strike back against the United Earth Sphere Alliance which rules over them with armed force. After catching sight of Heero Yuy, one of the Gundam pilots, Relena Darlian is caught up in the vortex of fate. Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei–four other Gundam pilots with the same mission as Heero–begin encountering one another as if drawn together. Through the schemes of Treize Khushrenada, leader of the secret society known as OZ, they end up wiping out the peaceful faction of the Alliance leadership. With this incident, OZ steps onto the center stage of history.
