Behind-the-scenes footage showing how the opening sequence of the TV anime Goodbye, Lara was produced has been released.
The opening features the song “Sayonara Lara” by Ikimonogakari and includes scenes created using traditional cel animation techniques. The approximately nine-minute video, titled “How ‘Goodbye, Lara’ Was Made -Behind the Scenes- OP Production Edition”, takes viewers through the entire production process, from the initial planning meetings to the final filming.
The video also gives a closer look at the challenges involved in filming the cel animation. The production team first had to search for photographers and equipment capable of shooting cels. However, some of the equipment they found was either dead or damaged due to battery issues, meaning repairs had to be made before filming could begin. These unexpected problems and other behind-the-scenes moments are shown in the video.
Goodbye, Lara began airing in July as an original anime created to celebrate Kinema Citrus’ 15th anniversary. The series is available to stream on Crunchyroll.

Goodbye, Lara follows the journey of Lara, a mermaid princess in search of “true love.” Two centuries ago, she fell in love with a human prince, but their love remained unfulfilled. Heartbroken, she vanished into a bubble. Now, 200 years later, she is mysteriously reborn as a human in Lake Biwa, Shiga Prefecture, and begins her quest anew.
