The manga The Summer Hikaru Died, written and illustrated by Mokumokuren, has released its final chapter.
The series has officially come to an end after nearly five years. The creator also shared a message thanking everyone for their support throughout the series.
Special message of Mokumokuren:
“When the series first began, I didn’t know how to put into words what I wanted to draw. But now, I feel like I no longer need to explain it. I am deeply grateful to all the readers who appreciated The Summer Hikaru Died and engaged with it so sincerely. There are no monsters in this world, but I offer my blessings to those who still feel like monsters themselves.”
The series began serialization on Kadokawa’s Young Ace Up web platform in August 2021 and currently has nine collected volumes. It has received several nominations and awards, including recognition from the Manga Taisho, Tsutaya Comic Awards, Eisner Awards, and Next Manga Awards.
Meanwhile, the anime adaptation by CygamesPictures is currently streaming on Netflix, with a second season in production.
Yen Press publishes an official English version of the manga and describes the story:
It has Hikaru’s face. It has Hikaru’s voice. It even has Hikaru’s memories. But whatever came down from the mountains six months ago isn’t Yoshiki’s best friend. Whatever it is, it’s dangerous. Carrying on at school and hanging out as if nothing has changed—as if Hikaru isn’t gone—would be crazy…but when it looks so very like Hikaru…and acts so very like Hikaru…
