Adieu Galaxy Express 999, the second theatrical anime film based on Leiji Matsumoto’s classic Galaxy Express 999 manga, will celebrate its 45th anniversary with special 4K remastered screenings in Japan starting in December 2026.
The participating theaters and screening schedule will be announced at a later date.

Originally released in 1981, the film was directed by Rintaro and animated by Toei Animation. Masako Nozawa voiced Tetsuro, while Masako Ikeda voiced Maetel.
The original Galaxy Express 999 manga was serialized from 1977 to 1981 and collected into 18 volumes. It was also adapted into a TV anime series that aired from 1978 to 1981, along with three theatrical films.

In a distant future, Tetsuro a human boy who wants his body replaced with a robotic one. This is possible, but to do so he has to reach the Immortal Planet onboard the space train Galaxy Express 999.
