Crunchyroll has announced that the anime film AKIRA will return to theaters in the United States and Canada on September 4, 2026.
The film will be shown in a new 4K restoration and presented in IMAX. It will be available in both Japanese with English subtitles and an English dubbed version.

Originally released in Japan in 1988, AKIRA is based on the manga by Katsuhiro Otomo, who also directed the film. It was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and became a landmark in sci-fi and cyberpunk animation, influencing filmmakers and artists worldwide. A 4K remaster of the film was first released in Japan in 2020.
