Mamoru Oshii’s ANGEL’S EGG 4K Restoration Unveils Alternative Visual

Dreams reimagined.

Mamoru Oshii drafted, wrote, and directed the OVA ANGEL’S EGG, with Yoshitaka Amano overseeing the original concept and art direction. A new alternative visual for the 4K remastered edition has now been revealed marking the first time Tondabayashi has created alternative artwork for a film.

“It is natural to meet someone by chance, share a space for a moment, and exchange a few words—yet those encounters can change your destiny entirely. The ribbon that firmly protects the cracked egg takes the form of a girl. Meanwhile, the boy’s eyes remain hidden beneath the egg’s vivid red shadow”

Alternative Visual:

Angel’s Egg, the first original OVA has received a full 4K restoration for its 40th anniversary. Originally released by Tokuma Shoten on December 15, 1985, the 71-minute film also enjoyed a limited theatrical run at the time.

The new 4K restoration made its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 20, as part of the festival’s Cinéma de la Plage program.

In Japan, the film debuted in Dolby Cinema locations on November 14 before expanding to theaters nationwide on November 21. GKIDS is distributing the 4K version in North American cinemas, accompanied by an official synopsis:

In an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream. At first, it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two.

Forty years after the film’s original release, GKIDS is proud to present an all-new 4K restoration of the film, supervised by director Mamoru Oshii, in cinemas nationwide for the very first time.

The film is a creative collaboration between acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), who wrote and directed the feature, and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theolog with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.
