Sequel to Cult Anime Tamala 2010 Acquired for North American Release

Deaf Crocodile and Cartuna team up!

Deaf Crocodile and Cartuna have announced their joint acquisition of North American rights for Tamala 2030: A Punk Cat in Dark, the long-awaited sequel to the cult cyber-noir anime Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space.

Described as a “psychedelic cyber-noir,” the new film is slated for a theatrical release in 2026, following its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, running from July 16 to August 3, 2025.

A trailer for Tamala 2030, complete with English subtitles, is now live on YouTube, teasing a heady mix of sci-fi noir, satire, and existential chaos.

Teaser:

This latest entry in the Tamala universe follows earlier spinoffs like the 2007 OVA Tamala on Parade and Tamala’s Wild Party.

Directed by the original creative duo t.o.L (K. and kuno), alongside Kentaro Nemoto, Tamala 2030 picks up the surreal and subversive threads of the original. This co-acquisition marks the first collaboration between Brooklyn-based animation studio Cartuna and indie distributor Deaf Crocodile, signaling a shared interest in cult animation and boundary-pushing storytelling.

SYNOPSIS:
Carefree, coquettish, and capricious, Tamala is the cutest girl-cat in dystopian Cat Tokyo, year 2030—or at any other point in the time/space continuum. She has randomly invited herself along on her detective friend Michelangelo’s missing-person investigation. It seems the case is one of seven sudden vanishings in an astronomical pattern across Cat Japan that occurred at the exact same moment one night.

Their search leads ever deeper into a mystery with ancient, occult roots and apocalyptic implications—and threads leading to Tamala herself. Shadowed by a covert agent of the Catty & Co. consortium, she may in fact be the greatest enigma. Indolent ingénue? Megacorporate mascot? Mythic messiah, or manifestation of cosmic malevolence? Anyhow, wow—she sure is a great dancer!
