The Sunrise Robot Laboratory continues to breathe new life into classic mecha anime, and Blue Gale Xabungle is the latest project to get a modern revival. Originally released in 1982 under the title Combat Mecha Xabungle, the series was directed by Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino and later adapted into the compilation film Xabungle Graffiti.
In May 2025, Sunrise released “BLUE GALE XABUNGLE SIDE L”, a five-minute video recreating the original opening and iconic scenes with modern CG animation. The “L” in the title stands for “Legacy” and “Legend,” following the format set by Sunrise’s earlier Aura Battler Dunbine Side L project.

Building on this, Sunrise has now confirmed that a “Side R” video is in production. The “R” project will reinterpret the world of Xabungle with fresh design elements and a brand-new theme song. This time, the revival will feature a special collaboration with Houkago Climax Girls, one of the popular idol units from THE iDOLM@STER SHINY COLORS.
The Side R teaser has already been released, hinting at a unique crossover that blends classic mecha action with modern idol culture.

Through the Sunrise Robot Laboratory, these beloved series are not only being preserved but actively reimagined for new generations. With the fusion of timeless anime and contemporary music, the Blue Gale Xabungle Side R project promises to deliver a fresh experience for both long-time fans and newcomers.
